Chapter 4
The Secret of the Hedgehog Girl

"Why does Eggman keep trying to take Ember?!" Sonic asked Shadow.

"He's after her because she's a hybrid dragon. She's a mix between a hedgehog and a dragon. She can switch forms from one to the other or even just change certain parts of her body." Shadow answered.

"You can't be serious! She's a dragon!? How is that possible?!! She's so nice and everyone knows dragons are evil." Tails said, shocked by what Shadow had said.

"They're not all like that. A few dragons are but not all of them." Shadow corrected him. Ember could hear their conversation and what Tails said unsettled her.

Shadow had brought up the secret she had been hiding since the first day she met Sonic, who, at this time, was at least 83 feet tall. She looked over at Silhouette, who looked back at her like she had been the whole time.

She asked Silhouette to get her a piece of paper and something to write with for when she was feeling better. She asked Silhouette to leave while she went back to sleep… as well as asked her to tell the boys to keep their voices down. While Silhouette was away, Ember began to write something on the piece of paper.

After she was done writing, she opened the window silently. She slipped out of the house without a sound and then closed the window. She got all fours and charged forward, moving at a speed she wouldn't be able to reach on two legs. Her charge left a trail of tossed up grass and small dirt impressions. She had reached the forest when she heard Sonic yell, "WHAT???!!!!". She knew that if she wanted to get away, she would have to speed up.

Each one immediately scattered and started searching for Ember. Ember was jumping from tree to tree at top speed. Sonic first spotted her when he saw her slip off some wet tree bark. He began walking towards her. He reached out to grab her, but, in an instant, she got back up and continued her dash. Sonic started walking after her.

She had gotten a far distance ahead by this time. She was exhausted and stopped under the shade of a tall tree. She looked up then looked at Sonic, who was getting closer and closer.

He was close enough to see her. He watched as she pounced into the tree. She reclined on a branch and was trying to catch her breath. He took a few steps towards her. He sat on his knees and separated the branches. He found her breathing heavily. He slowly began to wrap his hand around her. Her eyes opened abruptly. She let out a short yelp and ran off, but she didn't have enough energy to jump to the next tree and hit the ground.

Sonic took a small step forward, causing a small quake. He got on one knee and picked her up while she was trying to stand. He carried her back to the house. He didn't let her go until the others returned. "Sonic, you found her!" Tails cheered. Shadow just crossed his arms. Silhouette climbed up and over Sonic's back, ran down his front, and jumped onto his hand.

She let out happy sounding squeals as she hugged and squeezed Ember. "I was so worried about you!! That note you wrote… You know I've known about your secret all this time…I was your friend…before… and after…" Silhouette murmured, as if daydreaming.

"I know...but I was...worried about their.... response....to knowing about it.... I still am..." Ember said, shedding a few more tears. She was still breathing heavily.

"I don't care what your secret is! I just wanna see you smile!" Sonic laughed, trying to cheer her up.

"I still think you're a good person no matter what you are," Tails continued.

"I think she's just a pathetic weakling." Shadow said aloud, folding his arms and turning to go back to the house.

Sonic stomped his massive foot. It came crashing down in front of Shadow and knocked him off his feet. Shadow scowled up at Sonic, who was holding Ember. She was crying and looked hurt. Sonic bent down and grabbed Shadow. Sonic was enraged and provoked thoroughly. Tails and Silhouette were on their knees, each with one hand on Ember's shoulder. (Silhouette had her hand on Ember's left shoulder and Tails' hand was on her right shoulder.)

"SHADOW!!!!!!!!!! HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT TO HER!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT DID SHE EVER DO TO YOU!!!!!!!! CAN'T YOU SEE SHE'S HURTING???!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT YOU SAID WAS JUST PLAIN COLD-HEARTED SHADOW!!!!!!!!" Sonic scolded him, his voice booming angrily. Ember started crying harder and harder. She tried multiple times to shake off the pain, sorrow, and heartache. Each time she tried, it just hurt more and more.

Tails put his arms under Ember's. He flew her down and took her into the house. He gave her a few gulps of water and tried to calm her down. It didn't work, it just made everything much worse. Ember ran out the open door on all fours. She charged towards the island and jumped into the calm water. She swam in a way that made her look like a serpent.

She reached the island. She sat down in front of the water… she just sat there, not moving, just sobbing endlessly. Finally night came, Tails had explained everything to Sonic, Shadow, and Silhouette.

Ember was crying for a long time. When night came, the light from the moon and stars made the water shimmer and sparkle. Watching the sparkling water calmed and relaxed her like nothing else could ever do. She fell asleep after a few minutes. She was awakened when Sonic stepped onto the island. He stepped on many of the plants, meaning more of the island's past had been ruined.

He walked over to her. All of her quills stood up like an angry cat. She snarled viciously, looking him in the eyes. He was shocked to see the violence in her eyes. Shadow just mocked her again. Suddenly her nails became a deadly level of sharp. She growled ferociously. Her dull teeth slowly turned into razor sharp fangs. Her quills separated. The quills on her head separating and becoming the sharp spines going from her head to her tail. The ones on her back split into two groups and merged then they sank into her skin and came out in the shape of wings. Her ears became long and pointed and her eye shape changed and took a spear-like shape. Then her muzzle became longer and her tail became long and whip-like, ending in a spikey ball. Her shoes ripped apart and her feet had small quips. She grew to be twelve feet tall. She became covered in scales. She let out an angered roar and took off into the air.

She charged at Shadow, who was definately not prepared for this. She took him directly off Sonic's hand and had her hand around his neck. She pushed him to the ground and held him down. He struggled to break free from her grip but he couldn't. He was running out of breath. He looked like he was pleading for her to let him go. She saw the look in his eyes and it reminded her of all the pain she had ever felt.

She tossed him aside and began to fly away. Sonic grabbed her by the tail and didn't let go (even though he was now bleeding). She turned and had a look filled with regret. She looked like she had just walked into a nightmare. Tears were streaming down her muzzle. Sonic put Tails and Silhouette on his shoulder and used his other hand to comfort Ember.

For the first time, she pushed her head against his fingers as if she was cuddling them. She wanted to be comforted. He stroked her gently as he raised her to eye level. "Ember…… are you okay? …Is Shadow okay? ……What happened?" Sonic asked, though he wasn't sure if she could speak in this form.

"I'm fine. Shadow is still alive. I-I couldn't help it. I was hurt and angry. I just had to do something to even the score." Ember replied, her voice sounding like that of an angel. She sounded so innocent and harmless. She started crying more.

"It's gonna be okay. You're safe with me, alright?" Sonic said, smiling peacefully. He continued to stroke her scales. He seemed to be reading her mind. She felt like Sonic was gonna hurt her after she attacked Shadow like that.

Shadow teleported onto the top of the hand Sonic was using to comfort Ember. "Not too shabby… for a hybrid dragon, I mean." Shadow remarked, "But you didn't use any of the typical, long-range dragon attacks. Are you really that stupid?!" he continued, mocking the dragon that had almost killed him. In a swift motion, a powerful, rainbow-colored flame shot at Shadow, who dodged it at the last second. "Very impressive… You are truly an intelligent dragon and quite skilled as well." Shadow laughed, walking toward Ember, who just snarled at him. "Hey! I'm trying to complement you. You have proved yourself a worthy opponent. I want to challange you. I promise I won't use any of my special attacks in this battle. If you win, I will apologize to you. If I win, you have to say that I was right."

Ember seemed to be entertained. "I accept your challenge. We must find a different location for our fight. I don't want to disturb the peace of this area."

The two of them went into the forest and used that as their battle field. Shadow was the first to strike. He landed a successful blow. Ember smirked and shot a bolt of electricity then switched to a beam of ice which froze Shadow solid. Ember quickly shot her blast of multi-colored fire. Shadow was burnt. He pulled out a gun and tried shooting at her. The bullets hit her but had no effect. She had curled up into a ball and her scales turned into solid metal. She rolled through the bullets and rammed directly into Shadow. She bounced on him and spun in the air. She landed on him, still spinning, and practically drilled into him. He hit the ground and couldn't get back up.

"Ha! I won! Now you have to apologize!" Ember cheered.

"Okay. I'm sorry for hurting your feelings. I meant to." Shadow said, making a joke out of his last sentence (though he really meant it; he had been trying to get her angry enough to switch form so he could challenge her).

Ember just him gave a sharp-fanged smile. The sharp spiked ball on her tail disappeared and her sharp claws shrank back. She went to her regular size but was still in her dragon form. She started changing back into her hedgehog form but stopped. She changed her wing shape from short, thick, and extremely round to thin, sleek, arched, light, long, and graceful. She beat her wings fiercely and took off. Sonic tried to grab her but her spines shot up and rattled violently.
